Free Government Cell Phone

Free government phone discount, or better known as Lifeline Program was introduced by the Government of United States in 1985 for low income consumers. It was extended to a free government cell phone program in the year 2005 to accommodate prepaid wireless service plans through which qualifying American citizens can benefit from the security of owning a cell phone and open up doors to various opportunities.

Free Government Cell Phone - Lifeline Program

Through Lifeline Program, eligible low income Americans can easily connect with family members, healthcare services, potential employers, other emergency services and much more.

The program is available to qualified individuals with proper proofs in all parts of the country (state, territory, commonwealth and tribal lands). You have to be an individual with an income below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines. You may also be eligible, if you participate in any one of the following qualifying state, federal or tribal assistance programs listed below:

  • Medicaid
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps or SNAP)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Federal Public House Assistance (Section 8)
  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)
  • National School Lunch Program’s Free Lunch Program
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TTANF)
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
  • Head Start (if income eligibility criteria are met)
  • State assistance programs (if applicable)

Benefits Available Under Lifeline Program

Under Lifeline Program, eligible consumers get free government cell phone or landline telephone service with a fixed discounts currently set at $9.25 per month per household.
